Exploring Vancouver’s Queer History

Call for Submissions: Pride in Vancouver

Pride celebrations have a long history in Vancouver and today include a wide range of activities all over the city. We’ve already begun to showcase the history of Pride on QueerHistoryProject.com, with this interview with Rob Atkinson about the creation of the Vancouver Pride Society, and this chronology of the Pride Parade. But we need more stories, more perspectives, and more memories that illuminate the various facets Pride has had in this city. We need you!

In July, the month leading up to Pride celebrations in Vancouver, we will be showcasing stories on the theme Pride in Vancouver. We are now seeking recollections (1-2 paragraphs), photographs, and video or audio recordings about your experience Pride celebrations both official and unofficial.

The recommended submission deadline is June 28th, 2009. However, we will be posting stories throughout the month, so if you submit after the deadline your story may still appear on our site.

As always, we continue to accept any stories related to queer history in Vancouver at any time.

Some suggestions:

  • Tell us about your first Pride experience
  • What Pride events have you attended (e.g. East Side Pride, the Pride Parade, Pride in Art, the Vancouver Dyke March)? How are they different from each other?
  • If you don’t participate in Pride, why not? What alternatives to Pride have you been involved in?

To submit a story, create an account by going here and following the instructions.
